Time Out common issues

When connecting Synergy between two computers, you may see an error like "Time Out" when trying to connect from the client to the server. Take a look at the following list of common reasons and solutions:

Confirm that you are using the IP address and not the hostname

In the client computer, confirm you are putting the "server" IP address and not the hostname, then hit Apply. If you are not sure of the server IP, please see the instructions below as to how to check the IP address.

Make sure you are using the correct IP address

Example:

Most of the time, an IP address that ends on number "1" is not the right IP to use, you need to use the IP address that is used by your WiFi or Ethernet adapter. If you are using Windows, if you right-click on your WiFi signal icon on the system tray:

- Click on Open Network an Internet Settings, click on "Change Connection Properties":

- Scroll down to Properties, and you will be able to see the correct IP address:

Set the Network type to Private

Now, if you are using the correct IP address, and still getting a time out, it is possible that the "server" computer network adapter type is set to Public, which means it makes the computer not discoverable in the local network.

To fix this, 

right-click on your WiFi signal icon on the system tray:

- Click on Open Network and Internet Settings, click on "Change Connection Properties", then change to Private:

Add firewall rule on custom or the default application

In some cases, you may need to add a manual firewall rule to allow traffic on port 24800 (default, can be edited) in your server computer, to do this, please create an inbound rule to allow traffic on port 24800 (TCP).

If you use a third party Firewall solution, please check with the solution support to find out how to add a rule to allow local traffic on port 24800.
