Written for Synergy 3 (v3.7.2) and Synergy 1 (v1.21.4), checked 3 October 2026.
To use Synergy 1 or Synergy 3 with Wayland, run GNOME (v46 and later) or KDE Plasma (v6.1 and later) on a distro with the very latest Wayland libraries, and install the package made for your distro and release. If a feature you need doesn't work on Wayland, switch to Xorg: Switch back to Xorg on Ubuntu
Wayland support in Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 is experimental, and each Wayland feature often depends on having the very latest Wayland libraries (libei and the desktop portals). Those usually arrive first in rolling distros such as Arch Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed; on other distros a feature can be missing until a later release of the distro.
Wayland is a display server protocol. It is aimed to become the successor of the X Window System.
We would like to thank Peter Hutterer (aka whot) and Olivier Fourdan from Red Hat for their work on Wayland support. Peter's work on the libei and libportal libraries was essential to allow Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 to work with Wayland.
Packages that work only on Xorg
Every Linux package for Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 is built for Wayland, except these, which work only on Xorg because the release has no libei library:
- Ubuntu 22.04 (Synergy 1 and Synergy 3)
- Debian 12 (Synergy 1)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Rocky Linux 8 and 9 (Synergy 1)
On Raspberry Pi OS, use Xorg with either product: its desktop isn't GNOME or KDE Plasma.
For a distro based on another one, such as Linux Mint, use the package for the distro it's based on. For the packages each product has, see: Operating system and hardware requirements
Wayland compatibility
The only desktop environments currently supported with Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 on Wayland are GNOME (v46+) and KDE Plasma (6.1+). For more information, see the backends that currently support the Input capture portal: XDG Desktop Portal
Clipboard sharing works on Wayland in Synergy 1 (v1.21.1 and later) and in Synergy 3 (v3.7.2), when your desktop supports clipboard sharing through its portal. If you need clipboard sharing and it doesn't work on your desktop, switch to Xorg: Switch back to Xorg on Ubuntu
Hotkeys on a Wayland server work in Synergy 1 (v1.21.2 and later) on distros with the latest libraries, but not yet in Synergy 3. For details, see: Hotkeys not working on Wayland
Support for libei and its versioning on various Linux distros is constantly changing; an updated list can be found on Repology.
